A couple's home has been burgled, the police arrive with a can of spray that causes what's missing to become visible again and glow salmon-coloured. The Spray is a freakishly simple story, almost childlike in its imaginative assumptions. The end, though, feels like an attempted reconciliation so deeply entrenched in Lethem's private past that the reader is excluded from the emotional exchange.Īlone almost worth the price of the book is the wrenching tale of two people in love and the compromises necessary to stay that way. They prefer to cling to the strangling, cartoonish ghosts of their high-school selves. The narrator, a modestly successful illustrator, and Matthew - whose life, though colourful, never seemed to settle into a direction of any intrinsic rightness and is now in descent - can't seem to see and accept the adult versions of each other. Planet Big Zero, however, best friends from the privately coded world of adolescence are awkwardly reunited in their thirties.

Lethem's work has recently shifted toward at least the illusion of the autobiographical, which accounted, I think, for much of the breadth and tenderness on display in the latest novels.
